Default Oil, what to use

Halfords have a good offer on their own oils at the moment, €10 for 4 litres. I've been using their 10w40 part synth in the Rex for a while, but the car seems to be using a lot of oil (I'd have to top it up a couple of times using a litre at a time between 10km changes, doesn't appear to be leaking, though). I was wondering if I could use their 5w30 fully synth and if so, would it be better or worse for the engine?

5w30 would be a lighter oil so would burn easier thats more ment for modern engines

If it was me Id stay on the 10w40 semi synth
Oil id probably being burnt off in the cylinders either through the valve seals or up past the piston rings

I have 2x 5L of Lidl 10w40 and 2 hamp filters in the garage - ring me if you're interested.

VTEC's always use a bit of oil - mine used ~500-700 ml between services. Wouldn't really concern me too much.

Old dual carb never used a drop.
