Default Syncro wear

These pics are from a random Honda in my shed.
This is a complete gear. The teeth on the top, are what mesh the gears together. Notice the teeth, how they are worn. This is were the nasty crunchs come from.

This is the easiest, replaceable part. It acts as a brake, to speed up the gear, so they can connect, at similar speeds.

This guy, is directly connected to the shaft. See the splines on the inside. A sleeve slides on top of this then, and when it connects to the gear, the shaft is locked to the gear. The next few pics will show.

Notice how there are teeth on this too.

This is it engaged now. Hopefully you can see on this operates now. The purpose of the teeth, is to try and get it to engaged better.
This gear set is bollixed,so new teeth, would look much better

Nice Post.

For anyone with a crunchy box try Honda MTF before a rebuild. It works Voodoo magic. My SiR box used to crunch going into 3rd at high revs when I bought it. A quick change for MTF and it's been perfect ever since (100,000 km at least)

MTF = manual transmission fluid
ATF = automatic transmission fluid

Land Rover MTF94 is pretty good stuff too, cured my slightly crunchy fifth gear.

Ya, I mix 10w40 mineral, oil not synthetic, as tis too thin.
With Automatic transmission fluid,
50/50 mix, and it works wonders.

10W40 was originally speced by Honda, but they ended up developing MTF because of premature synchro wear (or so the legend goes). After witnessing teh magic I wouldn't put anything else in my box. The Land Rover stuff is the same spec.
